Partnering with The Salvation Army.

In an effort to fully utilize donations and volunteer support our daily operations have been managed by The Salvation Army since 2018. They have a pivotal role in daily food distribution, as well as providing much needed staff and volunteer personal.

Job Experience, Volunteer Hours, and Practicums

The Bread of Life provides jobs for those looking for their first paid position in the workforce.  Employees learn the basics of a commercial kitchen, guided by our experienced Kitchen Supervisor in an encouraging and sometimes fast-paced environment.  Vacancies are advertised on our website and with Alberni Valley Employment Centre. Food Safe Certificate is a requirement of the job.

We provide job shadow experience for NIC Employment Transition Culinary Assistant Program students and practicums for NIC HSW students.  Students requiring volunteers hours as a prerequisite to the HSW programs also receive real world experience serving and interacting with a diverse range of clients. Our practicum program introduces students to the daily operations and administration of a small non-profit and familiarizes the student with the many helping agencies and resources available within our community.  Students also have many guided opportunities to interact with clients and practice their communication skills learned in the classroom.

Community

We work with several other community agencies sharing resources and information and referring clients to each others' services as needed.

This summer we've connected with Ashley from the AV Gleaning Project and she's already brought us some cherries gleaned from an AV residence - love this program!

Our grocery gleaning program diverts grocery store food waste from the landfill and provides ingredients for our meals,  take home ingredients for our guests, sharing with other agencies.... and all food not consumable by us humans goes to livestock feed in Port Alberni.  Thank you to MV Bakery, Quality Foods, Save-On, No Frills and Buy-Low for participating in this program. Big thanks to our volunteer driver Al who does our driving for this program 5 days a week!!

There are many clubs and organizations that support us by donating and volunteering to help us keep our services running and we are so grateful to all of them and are happy to help at their events when the need arises.

If you know of an agency or organization that we should be connecting with to share and/or provide more assistance to those in need in our community, please contact us - we'd love to hear from you!

Spiritual Support

Spiritual care and counseling is available at the Bread of Life Centre on request  Spiritual care is a type of counseling that offers spiritual and emotional support. Spiritual support can help you find value, meaning, trust, and strength during difficult times. Support is only a phone call away and we do our best to provide companionship and support to all guests in need.
